Rangdum is a remote village situated 3,657 m (11,998 ft) above the sea level, in an isolated region of the Suru valley in the Ladakh region in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. It’s a picturesque village surrounded by mountains and glaciers. There is no access to electricity or phone in Randgum.

It’s about  100kms from Kargil which is synonymous with the 1999 Indo-Pak war. Rangdum is located midway between Kargil and Padum. There is an 18^th century Buddhist monastery on top of a hill overlooking the village of 50 odd houses. The suru valley region gets an extended winter season which lasts around 7 months of the year. The village is inaccessible during the winter as the road access gets cutoff. There is wheat cultivation apart from few other crops. Due to the brief summer the crops are few and the locals depend on supplies from outside. It’s surprising to learn that the locals remain indoors for a couple of months during the peak of winter.
